Advisory Committees Issue Reports on I-35 and I-69 Corridors
With a charge to study the current and future needs of the I-35 and I-69 Corridors, two citizens’ committees told the Texas Department of Transportation that mobility improvements are needed to both corridors.
The I-35 Corridor Advisory Committee report recommended improving existing infrastructure, as well as building new transportation segments where practical and including rail alternatives.
The I-69 Corridor Advisory Committee report concluded that Texas build I-69 and it should include rail and highway systems. In addition, the committee suggested the freight shuttle and other innovative transportation solutions should be pursued.
Both committees also addressed funding issues by stating that current revenue sources in Texas are not sufficient. Adding that Texas should more aggressively pursue all federal funding options, as well seek private capital to meet some of the transportation needs.
While the committees studied the corridors independently of each other, they came to similar conclusions on important issues.
- Projects should be developed as needed to meet local transportation demand and should also be compatible with corridor-wide mobility
- The Trans-Texas Corridor, one-size fits all concept, including the 1200 ft cross-section is not the preferred delivery option. In addition, the “TTC” concept should be eliminated.
- The use of existing rights of way, wherever possible, should be considered first
- Communities should be fully engaged in the planning and decision-making process
Supporting the committees’ conclusions for mobility improvements are the rising transportation demands, the inability for existing infrastructure to efficiently move goods and people, and the economic value resulting from mobility improvements.
